On Saturday, April 1, 2017, from 8:30am-1:00pm the Women of Redeemer Eastside Church will gather at the Preston Community Center and will have the opportunity to participate in our first mini-retreat.  You may be wondering, “What is a retreat?” The word “retreat” generally means “to withdraw”.  The women of our church are not trying to run away or escape from anything but rather are withdrawing to hear God speak to us through the Holy Spirit by studying and examining God’s Word.  With the never-ending demands on women today and the seemingly mounting responsibilities, it is necessary to step outside of our normal daily routines in order to quiet the noise, remove distractions, and be able to listen intently and focus on what God has to say to us.  In Colossians 3:1-2, Paul instructs us to “seek and set our minds on things that are above”.  This mini-retreat creates the space to set our gaze upon Jesus.

  1. To grow in the knowledge and love of Christ through the study of God’s Word. (Col. 3:16)

In Colossians 3:16, Paul instructs believers to “let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”  The retreat will include worship through music, teaching from God’s Word, time for personal reflection to ask the Holy Spirit to apply the Word to our hearts, group discussion time to ask questions and dig deeper.

  1. To renew our minds. (Ro. 12:2)

We are daily inundated with cultural norms, expectations, and belief systems regarding who we are and how we are to live.  God’s Word tells us “do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds…”  At the retreat we will withdraw to soak in God’s Word, and we will trust the Holy Spirit to align our thinking with God’s desires.

  1. To learn how to live out the gospel in our daily lives.  (Col. 2:6-7)

In Colossians 2:6-7, Paul says to “walk in [Christ], rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith just as you were taught.”  At the retreat we will learn from God’s Word how the gospel fuels our actions because of who we are in Christ, and practical ways to live out the gospel.

  1. To encourage and build each other up. (1 Thess. 5:11)

At the retreat, we will be able to have the opportunity to learn from other women—women who are mature in Christ—and hear what God is doing in and through their lives.  This will grow our faith and encourage each of us to persevere in our walk with Christ.

  1. To connect and lovingly serve and care for others. (He. 10:24-25)

In our digital age, it is easy to withdraw from others and become dependent on technology as our means to foster relationships.  It is clear from God’s Word that this is a false intimacy.  We are meant to live interdependently—not independently—as we depend on God to grow our love for others and unite us in Christ.  This retreat will help us to withdraw to others—not away from others in isolation—as we delve into God’s Word together.

If you are weary from the daily grind of never-ending demands and activities, please retreat with us to quiet the noise, remove distractions, and create space to listen intently to what God has to say in His Word, as He renews our minds and transforms our lives all for His honor and glory.

“Christ in You [is] the hope of glory.”  (Col. 1:27)
